My speedo was doing the same thing not too long ago. A good cleaning and lube of the cable and a couple drops of oils on the lower bearing and it's working great. I even packed some grease in the speedo gear at the wheel.

i pulled the speedo and cleaned and greased the cable and the speedo bearing and it's working perfectly! thanks so much for everyone's suggestions!
