I love you guys for being concerned about the safety of it... I understand the dangers, just wanted to confirm it was possible as I was confused when it started when I had the battery out as I was wondering where it was getting the charge from the spark.

I dont run it with a battery I was just asking to get some answers to my curiousity surrounding my experince with it. Trying to understand how its doing what its doing. ;)

I started to edit my last post but your response and request for info on the subject deserves a separate answer:

The biggest concern is 'smoothing' and regulation of the modified AC -- modified by the rectifier -- from the alternator. You can use a big, naff-off capacitor or a smaller battery (the CL uses a 4Ah battery as it has no electric starter to support) but, in my professional opinion, unless you're weight-saving to race then it's a no-brainer to fit the recommended battery. Our charging systems have no regulator to speak of; the voltage regulation is taken care of by a balancing act, carefully thought out at design stage. And we sod about with it, now that we have better battery technology!

I'll point you to some of my/our experiments which have proved successful if you wish; but running without any battery at all isn't recommended.
