Bike conked out. fully charged and timing correct

Post by allthumbs » Mon Jul 21, 2008 7:22 pm

I went for a ride this evening. It had cooled down nicely and I had just taken my battery off charger. nice and strong. put on my wifes new bright red helmet and set out. It ran great. shifting through all the gears, all the Harley guys looking on in envy as I passed. through town twice, out to the twisties, 20 minutes and coming down the home stretch, loss of power at 4k RPM, downshift, loss of power at 3k RPM and CONK. luckily I was almost home. pushed it the rest.

The lights were strong. both tail and head. It would not start again. what gives. I just fixed throttle cable, adjusted carbs and timing per LM's specs.

Is the alternator shot? If the battery if full of charge, is it not giving back to the bike?

anyone ever had this problem/know what it might be?

Thx much

allthumbs, This could be the gas cap not venting, loosen the cap next time you get to ride the bike and it does this. Also have you checked the petcock and fuel lines to see if there is an obstruction? Somthing to start with anyway,Good Luck,Kustommusic

Kustom,

something to do with a clog in the lines somewhere. I drained them and filled them again, twice. cleaned petcock and tightened everything. don;t know where it was but it seems gone

thx

I recommend you keep the gas lines as short as you can. ...............lm

You say keep the fuel lines a short as possible, how about inline filters. Can they be a problem? I have been experiencing the same symptom as kustommusic. I didn't think of checking the vent on the gas cap but I will. It is symptom is remedied when I remove the cap and then replace it.

Use the shortest/smallest non paper filters you can get. I use the tapered type with the sort of rock looking thing in it. Drill a 1/16 inch hole 180 across from the existing hole. ............lm
