Another No Spark Post

Post by bj » Thu Aug 07, 2008 3:19 pm

I know you guys have seen this before, but.......

I can't get a spark on my new CA77.

I just bought this as a parts bike. I am trying to see if I can get her running. Brand new plugs. I lightly sanded and cleaned the points and set the timing. No spark, but before I got them real clean, I saw a spark between the points.

Next, I tried a different coil, no luck.

Next, I tried a different condesor, no luck.

Next, I tried a different ignition (key) switch, no luck.

Next, I hooked the bike up to the battery from my truck, no luck.

At some point in time, before I got the bike, something got nice and hot and melted the outer cover of the main wiring harness in the air box area. When I peeled off the cover, the individual wires and insulators were intact. I can't find any damaged wires. It may be my imagination, but it seems that the coil feels a little warm during the trials.

What next?

Thanks,

Bryan

BJ, On anything with a points ign. system and no spark I like to start at the coil + and - connections. Using either a test light or an analog volt meter Check these two connections, With the key on check the + for battery voltage (it must be the same as whatever the battery is, within a few 10ths). Next check the - terminal. Again, with key on, your - terminal should cause the test light to flash on and off when you kick over your engine. Or if you are using a meter the needle should sweep back and forth. Btw, these tests are done with the battery charged and all wiring in place. This is a good place to start your diagnosis, let us know what you find and if you like P.M. me and I'll try to help some more. Good Luck, Kustommusic

Thanks,

I went out to take a look, and I don't know how I missed this before, but the wire going over the top to the coil to the terminal on the left, the neg?, was disconnected. Well there is the problem, I thought to myself.

I soldered that bugger back on and had another go, thinking it would surely work this time.

But, It didn't. No spark.

It did behave as you described though. I have a test light, but no meter yet. The terminal to the front would light up always, while the terminal to the rear, would light intermitantly while the engine turned over.

Thanks

Bryan

Well,

Now I got it going. It seems that the problem really was the disconnected coil wire.

I went back out and stared at it for awhile and notice that the points looked a little wet. So I cleaned them again, and sure enough......She Lives!

Didn't sound so good, but it ran.

Everyday I learn a little more.

Thanks!

Bryan
