32 Ways to Install Ignition - What's Correct???

Post by 48lesco » Fri Mar 05, 2010 12:00 pm

You can mount the condenser eight different ways. How did it come from the factory in 1964? Sometimes the Honda parts diagram hints at proper installation, but sometimes it presents an evil diversion... It would have you believe that it might be off the left coil bracket with wires directed forward although I've only ever seen one on the right bracket. Shows the ground strap on the left side too. Interesting photo from Scott Pargett's site that shows an aftermarket condenser mounted off the right bracket flipped upside-down (maybe) outboard of the coil pack with the wires directed aft. My guess is off the right bracket, positioned between the coils, with wires directed forward (away from the coil terminals or you would have too much loose wire) like the installation shown by davomoto and the electronic ignition tutorial. But what about the parts diagram...

Also, spark plug wires inside or outside the frame rails? Electronic ignition tutorial has them outside, davomoto inside.

The awful truth is that you would get spark any of the 32 POSSIBLE WAYS (wires inside, wires outside, one in, one out, etc... x 8 condenser options OMG!!! I can't go on without knowing...

I can't tell you for sure, but my original 1960 Service manual shows the condensors bolted to the right coil on page 75 fig 101, with the coils and leads pointing backwards.

HT (spark plug) leads definitely go inside the frame rails, under the carbs and back out from below the carbs to the plugs.

Clymer seems to use the same Honda pictures but P112 is missing that particular picture.

Clymer show the CL set up on P83 and it's the same.

Hope that helps you sleep better :-)

Thanks - that sure helps! Any chance you could post a pic? I don't have that service manual. It turns out the OEM -024 condenser I have has shorter leads than the later ones, and I don't think any of them have a long enough green lead to reach the (-) terminals if mounted with the leads directed forward without "modification." So that eliminates a number of possibilities...

I'll see if I can scan it. With the condenser the right side, the leads don't have far to go to reach the points. I'm surprised they don't reach, but if they are shorter than the originals I guess that could happen.

Sorry - I meant the short green lead that goes to the coil (-) won't reach if the condenser is mounted with the wires directed away from the coil terminals... Thanks for the pic 68Cb77 - That looks like how it probably should be. Were the HT leads outside the frame rails?
