Starter noise

Post by aaronstrader » Thu Jul 08, 2010 2:17 pm

My friend just recently aquired a 63 CB 77. It's cherry and has only 5000 miles on it, but it has been sitting for 35+ years. The hoses and everything look really good and we just cleaned the carbs and installed a new battery. When we go to use the electric start though about 50% of the time there is a terrible grinding noise accompanied with it. I'd really like to know what it might be. The kick start works fine there are no noises or grinding when we use it. The other problem we are having is getting it just to start we can kick start it and it will go for maybe 4 seconds then cut out. I checked the points they look good. We installed new spark plugs as well. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. I apologize if there is alread a FAQ on this i looked and couldn't find any. Thank you!

The grinding when you use the electric start could be worn or broken starter clutch parts (rollers, springs, or a broken starter clutch outer.

Or the gears or locator pin in the starter gear assembly could be worn/broken.

I know the sound you are talking about and it is horrifying. I replaced the starter clutch roller springs and tips, as well as the starter chain. The sound went away.
