Replacement coil for CA77

Post by garncarz » Tue Jul 29, 2014 7:27 am

Well, the original coil on my 1966 CA77 gave up the ghost yesterday. Secondary windings = infinite ohms. I was thinking about using the Accel coil below. It's a dual fire, points type, and the primary winding resistance is spot on with my old OEM coil. Thoughts, comments, experiences?

Almost any coil form a 70's Honda Four will work - I use one from a 550 -

The starter button isn't even all the way out and its running! With no choke from stone cold. Terrific throttle response.

Here's the set up: Accel 140406 super coil, Accel coil boots and terminals, NGK 7 mm copper ignition wires, tinned and soldered to the terminals, NGK non-resister plug caps, NGK D8HA plugs. And it all fits under the left side cover.

And now the bad news: Your friends in the neighborhood with steroes are not going to be happy when you ride past their houses. The EM signaure of ths bike, set up as noted above, is truely spectacular.

What is that under the coil that the red and yellow wires are attached too? What did you do with your Condenser? Also, I was wondering about this type of 12V coil used on Harley Davidsons; Thoughts?http://45restoration.com/Products/Coil- ... 5-12V.aspx

I replaced the selenium rectifier with a Kohler voltage regulator. The condenser is mounted on top of the cylender head, as usual. AS long as the primary resistance of that coil is 4-5 Ohms, it should be OK.

That's a good idea to use the Kohler voltage regulator!!
