For my preliminary cleaning I like to use goop hand cleaner and a toothbrush. It will remove an amazing amount of baked on grease that spray degreasers won't.

I've been using Goop for after garage hand cleanup and getting stains out of shirts for years. I NEVER thought to use it on engine parts.
