What is it with me & plugs!

Post by modelman » Fri Apr 22, 2016 6:46 am

Just finished a quad-bike resto so haven't touched the '77' for a few months, went to start it this morning, no spark, Oh great, full tank, so made a mess uncoupling that stupid cross-pipe to get at the coils, but all checked out OK, 12v at coils, condensers OK, all seemed good, touched the plug to engine, no spark, hold the plug AWAY from the engine & a big fat flash from the body to the engine, so my electrics seem OK & the brand-new plugs seem to be dud.

Last year I did a Suzuki GSX 1400, same again, rebuilt including 4 new plugs, then weeks later all 4 plugs were dead, all checked out OK, more new plugs & it runs like new????

Am I buying the worlds supply of duds, or don't they make 'em like they used to??

BTW, I don't USE these bikes, they're just projects, so maybe its lack of use?

First off Modelman reroute the petrol pipe so it go's over the frame then you do not have to drain the tank.
My rebuilt CB77 starts on the button after a very long lay up no problem, check out what plug cap you are using myself I have the following on my 1964 CB77

Plugs - NGK D8HA (don't gap em just stick em in)

Plug caps - NGK.

Eletronic ignition from Charlies Place (no problems great ignition)

Battery - Motobatt (just the best I have ever used)

RECTIFIER- REGULATOR 12 VOLT (£29 off Ebay)

Petrol - BP Ultimate unleaded (I use Lucas Fuel Stabaliser when I lay the bike up in the winter and never had any problems with petrol going off also use it in my Triumph 500)

My Starting proseger is turn petrol on full chock press button any time of year always fires first time open chock a little let engine warm up some time then away. Hope the above helps.

Ho and don't use Supermarket petrol.

I have seen plugs do that before. I had an '82 Camero that would screw up the #6 plug any time it misfired. I never did figure out what caused it, just carried spare plugs and a plug wrench in the back. It definitely was NOT the plug (cause it was ALWAYS #6 and never any others).

If it sparks from the plug body to the engine but not at the gap, throw your multimeter between the plug body and the hot side of the plug and let us know what the Ohm reading is. Anything less than infinity is a bad plug but even infinity isn't guarantee of a good plug.

Prolly not the plugs. I haven't even bought new plugs in many years. I just sand blast and clean them and put 'em back in.
Hell, when I was younger and broker than I am today, I used to pull used plugs from the trash at the auto parts stores, blast 'em clean and use 'em. Never had a problem.

This is common practice with airplane engines. If they test okay after cleaning, just put 'em back in. It's such a waste to throw away perfectly good plugs simply because they have a bit of carbon or oil on them.
Do what you've always done and you'll get what you've always had.

SMBH,
I think the ign system is OK since other plugs I have (too big to fit) spark just fine.

Brand-new expensive gel-cell battery, & a guy I know delivers fuel to supermarkets AND filling stations & he tells me its the same brand/spec he collects from the refinery.

No replacement plugs locally, so new ones ordered.

Thanks for that Dianne, I never thought of that, I'll check it out tomorrow.
