Ok i'm new to the forum but i've learned tons already from readin old post. I've searched this topic but found nothing. My 68 Super Hawk just got back on the road after being in a garage for 25 years. it runs really well and teh speedo worked on my first test drive but i fear i've damaged the cable or something worse in the speedo. when i rode it yesterday the tach worked fine but the speedo, (all of a sudden,) started buzzing and the needle sprung all the way over to the max mph. I was wondering if it could be smoething as simple as a broken cable or something more complex? If anyone could offer some advice i'd really appreciate it. Much Thanks in advance.

Ya may want ta remove and clean the cable then lube with white grease. ...................lm

If after you clean and lube the cable as advised; you may need to dis-assemble the speedo itself. Go to G-man's post on speedos and follow his tutorial on getting it apart. The lower bearing gets dry and causes all kinds of havoc. Spray the bearing with a good solvent, then dry and lube. Don't let this process intimidate you, it's really easy to do. Rusty

speedoBefore disassembling your speedo you might try removing it from bike, turn it upside down, and drip a few drops of light machine oil down the cable hole. turn it right side up pretty quickly or you'll get a ring around the needle on the speedo face. You can test it with an electric drill before you put it back on to see if that fixes it. I found a large cotter pin that fit in place of cable to spin mine with drill.
