One loose bolt can do VERY bad things!

Post by 68Cb77 » Fri May 15, 2009 2:23 pm

Today reminded me that everyone needs to constantly check and tighten bolts/nuts!..after a complete restoration, with every nut and bolt removed, we need remind ourselves to check and double check everything...while riding this morning the bolt must have come loose, and came out of the front brake stopper arm! Hit the brakes, (thankfully at 25 mph), hub went around, ripped off the front fender and wrapped it under the wheel, shredded the front brake cable, broke the lever where the cable goes in, some cosmetic damage, and broke 2 of the tabs on the front fork where the fender arms attach....NOT GOOD....my $250 fender!!!! Damn.....my fault....should have checked this stuff more often...still don't really know how that bolt came out..pretty sure the tabs were bent over the bolt head. Maybe the threads on the fork leg are toast! Anyway, everyone take note! I managed to keep the bike up and save the rest of it, but there was about 10 seconds of W.T.F.
So, anybody want to sell a fender? Alloy forks! I'll keep smilin'

Loctite is a good idea too!

Man, too bad about the fender. I just sold an NOS late fender a couple of weeks ago. Maybe you could find one at the CVMG Father's Day Weekend show in Paris?

Or maybe is now your big chance to create that CB77 bobber you've always wanted????

Yeah, I'm still reeling with the mess, and as I look at the forks now, I think maybe too many people over the years, have put the wrong threaded bolt in that hole. I think the threads were bad in there and I didn't notice it when I put it back together. Are there a lot of parts at that Paris show?

Yes there is a fairly sizable swap meet there, but admittedly, trying to find a front fender for a late CB77 there might be a bit of a needle in a haystack (you never know though!). Even if you don't happen to find it, it's still a fun show. Can't think of anyone else in the T.O. area who'd have something like that - I'm so out of the loop there, I still miss Ontario Honda and Rick Andrews!

Thanks for sharing your experience. A valuable lesson for all of us who have dismantled and put our bikes back together.
I'm going to go over all of the bolts again on my Dream before it goes on the road.
