Fork disassembly, observations and a question.

The forks legs slid right out of the triple tree without any problems. One of the chrome covers came right off but the other was stuck. I saw a post where someone used a strap wrench but i didn't have one, so I drilled two 5/16 holes 1-1/4" apart in a pc of plwood, then i bolted the fork leg to the plywood using the 2 studs in the bottom of the fork. I clamped this set up to a bench and this allowed me enough leverage to twist the cover off. Once that was off I was able to get at the snap ring out, after that a few hard tugs and the seals slid out and that's as far as i went.

My questions are what is the paper sleeve inside the spring for? One of them is clearly ruined and i haven't been able to locate a new one.

What else should be done besides replacing the seals and changing the oil? Everything else looks clean and in good condition, does anything stand out to you in these pictures?

I would imagine that it's there to stop the springs from rubbing on, and damaging, the hard chrome surface that the seal rubs on.

That's one reason why springs are usually inside.
