Potential Noob Needs Advice

Post by IceQueen » Fri Mar 12, 2010 7:19 am

Hello all! I have the opportunity to purchase a '67 CB77 from a friend of mine. Haven't seen it yet. It's been in his garage for about 20-25 years. The gas tank has been taken off, but he has it. It's supposedly complete except for tank badges. But he isn't the orignal owner.

So...I'm seeking advice about what I should be on the lookout for when I do go see it. What parts are so hard to find or problematical that, if they are missing or trashed on this bike, it would be a deal-breaker?

I'm guessing it'll need a complete engine overhaul. Any feedback on what kind of $$ that might be?

Anything else I should consider before I make the decision to buy?

I really appreciate any advice!

Melanie, first thing is does the engine turn over? A complete engine build will run you about $700 if you do it all yourself up to $1500 + or - depnding on who does the work, and what hard parts are needed. Is the front fender there and uncut? They can be purchased, but are spendy, same for chaingaurd. On a 67, the muffler shoul be welded to the top pipe, a lot of people removed them with a hacksaw. How's the chrome look? chroming is expensive. Now, with all of that said, do you want a rider, or a show bike? Bobbed fenders and exhaust can surely be used for a rider. Post some pics when you go see the bike, as many angles as possible, and we'll be able to tell you what looks good/right, and what looks wrong/bad.

Thanks for the reply. I'll be looking to have a rider, not a show bike. Though that doesn't mean I am not interested in making it look good! It was supposedly running (seems like I've heard that before), but not running right, when it went into storage, but that was a long time ago. Will post pics when I have some.
