Newly acquired CB77, need to find out what year it is

Post by robmanero » Mon May 03, 2010 10:41 pm

Hello,
I just acquired my first Superhawk. Been collecting bikes for a long time, always wanted one of these and the opportunity just presented itself. I acquired the bike locally, from an older gentleman who had it stored since 1983. The bike has 1,000 original miles on it. First owner took a little spill, got scared and never rode it again. He sold it to the next owner, who cleaned it up and got it ready to go again. However, he was injured in an accident and broke his hip, and was never able to ride the superhawk. Stashed it away until it was unearthed last week and acquired by me!
My first question is what year the bike is. I need to switch the title over this week, current title has no model year listed. Honda ID guide does not list separate model years for the CB77. It must be a later unit, as it has the higher bars and later style gauges. Frame # is CB77-1053051. Engine # is CB77E-1053176.
Second question is, were these offered with chrome fenders? My fenders are chrome, but almost all the CB77s I see have silver painted fenders. It appears to be original and untouched.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Will try to post pics soon.

HONDA did issue the CB77 with chrome fenders but after frame number 1056084 so I'd say your 1967 bike may have had the fenders changed. ..................lm

Still haven't got a conclusive answer to what year my bike is. Isn't there anyone else who can help? I removed the tank today, tag on the wire harness says Sumitomo 1967. So I assume the bike would have been built in '67, but does this male it a '67 or '68 model year?

Rob, it is believed that Super Hawks (Super Sports in Domestic Japan & Europe) were not made after '67. That's not to say that none left the factory gates as late as Dec '67, nor indeed in '68. We're always searching for production info and I, for one, am constantly updating my knowledge base.

Here's an interesting article concerning one of the ultimate CB77s made; I'd love to know the frame number for my documentation collating!

To answer your question: Ed Moore, our LOUD MOUSE in TX, has stated that there's no such animal as a '68 CB77; the final model year is '67. Unless anyone else can prove otherwise, that is. And to actually prove that point it will need to come from a Japanese factory employee! Ed was The Man On The Ground during those Honda salad days.

There were dealership leftovers that didn't get registered until '68; a few in '69, even. Bill Moore's CB77 in the linked article, above, has been allocated a UK 'G'-suffixed registration number; 'G' suffixes ran from August 1 1968 to July 31 1969. The DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency) in the UK would have issued that registration number in accordance with the importation documentation accompanying the machine, so although Bill's, as "...one of the last made...", was possibly the rarer US '69-registered, it's still a '67 model year.
