1961 cb77 - Super Hawk

Post by Starr » Sat Jun 26, 2010 10:25 am

Hi Guys,

I'm a newbie to your form, and I just got a 61 CB77 Super Hawk. The bike was my grandpas and has been sitting for 25-30 years(indoors). I've had the bike for years but just got it home to start working on it.

I've been working on Quads for a while now, but have never did a project like this. I'm sure I'll be around for some time trying to learn what I'm doing.

Here's a few pics for now.

I live outside of Fargo, ND

F# CB77 - 1014156
E# CB77E - 1014308

I had a buddy run the nubers at a Honda shop and he told me 61.

Welcome.
Thank you for the numbers and as I suspected the bike is a 1965 issue.
Fairly original as the bars have been changed. .............lm

So what dose that mean 61 vs 65... as far as parts are this thing pretty interchangeable for certain years? I see a good about of parts on EBAY when just searching "CB77".

The motor is locked up and the inside of gas tank is rusted out, plus the left side header is rusted through. Outside of that it's mostly surface rust & dented fenders. So first thing is to get it running then cosmetics.

Like I said total newbie to these bikes only info I have gotten has been here the last few days.

Thanks

Nice. Looks like you have a ways to go though. Definitely read up on this forum, it's a wealth of info. From what I gather, most of the cosmetics are the same on the bike. The big differences come in on the inside of the engine.

If your engine is locked up, don't try forcing it to turn over as you'll just end up breaking or marring internals. What you want to do is either try to find an engine that turns over or start breaking that one down. Either way, step one is going to be to remove the engine from your bike. It would probably be a good candidate for boring out.

The first thing you should consider buying is either a restoration guide (available on the market section of this forum) or a shop manual (preferably both). After that, you should have the basics to get started. In the meantime, start reading about other people's engine rebuilds and restorations so you have an idea of what to expect and what others have done to solve common problems.
