Engine Breather Tube Smoking

Post by akpasta » Wed Jan 04, 2012 10:57 pm

Just bought a CB77, re-built, beautiful bike. Only about 450 miles on a rebuilt engine. Former owner rebuilt it and seems to really know what he's doing; tons of bikes at his place, real nice guy. Bought the bike from him, fair price. But I took it out for the first time tonight, and although it is performing just great, the engine breather tube is smoking quite a bit after it's warmed up, especially when I rev it up.

Called him up and he said it's probably cause he put a bit too much oil into it when he changed it before selling. I checked the oil, and sure enough, it's not between the two lines. However, it's not extremely high either. It's still on the reading part of the dip stick, but above the top line.

Could there be any other causes for this? You know, it's a new bike to me, just bought it, so I'm not sure. Like I said, seems to be running great, not smoking from the pipes, but the breather tube smokes. Should I be concerned?

Thanks.

I wouldn't be too concerned just yet. My CL350 smokes heavily out of the breather once warmed up with even just a little too much oil. Haven't had that experience with either of my 305s but I cant really say I've overfilled them really by much. You can always remove some of the oil and see if that helps. I know it's kind of a pain to do that but there's really nothing to lose. You could use an old turkey baster to remove some, or drain the oil into a clean container and then refill to proper level.

If it still smokes after that then it might be worth doing a compression check.
Also, if the bike hasn't ran in a while there's a chance that the rings could be stuck in the groves in the piston. Best thing to do if that's the case is go ride and see if it clears up.

Have fun with your new bike!

One more thing

Post by akpasta » Thu Jan 05, 2012 1:31 am

Thanks for the tip. Dude I bought it from was really cool so I don't think he was tryin' to swindle me, however, one other thing I just noticed when I went outside to admire the bike and let it idle a minute, is the right cylinder seems to warm up faster. It's cold here right now, but the right exhaust was getting warm, the left was not. Choke was on full, these bikes are cold blooded, and it wasn't fully warmed up yet, but shouldn't they warm up at the same rate?

Have you taken it for a ride yet? If you have and it seems underpowered then a plug might be either fowled or bad. The other thing that might be an issue is the fuel/carbs. That hot side might be running lean compared to the other. See if it they both get hot with the choke off.

I just got it yesterday, have ridden it maybe 15 miles. Performs really well, although in San Francisco I rarely go above 40mph. It definitely does not seem unpder-powered at all. I'm thinking now that it's not that big a deal, the bike is just new to me so I'm getting acquainted with it. and asking questions.

Smoking has only happened after running it hard and fast up some really steep hills, and I think that's probably just the oil being over-filled, as it still performs great and there isn't any smoke coming from the pipes, which you'd get if it were blow-by.

I just noticed the front-left valve cover is leaking oil as well. Could this have something to do with the odd difference in temperature between the left and right cylinder? Are these O-rings easy to replace? They were quite easy to replace on the 90. Odd that it's leaking if the engine was just rebuilt.

Also seems like when you adjust the idle screw on the right carb it has more affect then when you change it on the left.

Also the tach area on the left side seems to be leaking oil as well, is this a big deal?

I think ya need to check and read the info at the FAQ section of the yellow side listings.
Ya will see How To Tune your engine.
Ya will find answers there as ya work on your rebuilt engine. ........lm
