I don't think this bike will ever be a reliable rider I will take more than 5 miles from my house.

Ride side is dead.

Started and ran fine for a block, then started cutting out.

Cuts in and out a little, but mostly dead on right side.

Have gas, have full battery (checked), and the plug looks fine.

Sure behaving like low battery or fuel block, but that's not it.

The only thing I did was change my oil since last ride.

I am running out of excuses for this bike.

Loose screw on wire lead to points allowing the joint to rotate and ground out on the backing.

Back in business now.

I didn't touch that bolt when I set timing, so it must have vibrated loose.

I chased it down by applying what I learned here.

Checked compression (150 cold), spark, fuel in bowls -- all good. That left nothing but timing.

Still too darn lean though....

JL: I think you'll have a very reliable bike. You sound like you enjoy the challenges it has presented and you've done a good job with them. These old bikes are not like the new ones. They are all individuals. You gotta love them. Once you get the bugs worked out, you'll prefer it to any other ride. I guarantee it.

I may be repeating some some things here but i just wanted to jump in with my two cents, because i had the same problems, this may be a ridiculous thing to have overlooked but when i first rebuilt my bike i didn't even notice that the left cylinder had a CL77 carb and the right one had a CB77 carb. the CL77 carbs and the CB77 carbs work on both style bikes BUT you cannot have one of each, i didn't realize i had one of each until after a month of trying to get it to run right. and on top of that my jets didn't match at all. whoever slapped together my bike before i bought it did NOT know what the hell they were doing. Two different carbs=bike running but running really badly, MIX-matched jets=the same thing,

-just my ridiculous story

literally was about to give up after i realized the jets were mixed up, and fixing that didn't help. then one morning i saw that the choke lever said cb77 on it and the other carb had CL77 stamped on the mounting point to the engine.
