Running!

Post by Crispy1 » Sun Sep 07, 2014 10:52 am

Got her running yesterday!! I might try to post my first YouTube video.

After cleaning the tank, rebuilding the petcock with a kit and cleaning and setting the points, it started right up and idled like a kitten purring. I went for a ride and it had nothing off 1/8-1/4 throttle and would try to come back at full throttle but not really. I limped it back up our steep driveway, not easy, and started looking closer.

Because the PO said he knew the carbs were run dry back in 1981 and also because the bowls were so clean, I decided not to go through the carbs and give it a try first. Looking at the diagrams and reading here, it looks like my air screw circuit is working and maybe my main jet circuit but nothing in between. I'm going to take that question over to the Fuel/Carb Board.

One more general question... I just noticed (while watching the mouse nest fly out!) that the exhaust baffles are removed. Also noticed the PO was running D10HS plugs rather than 8's. The needle jet (what's that called?) is a #140. Did the PO make these changes because of having the baffles removed?

Thanks, C.

140 Main jets are probably due to removal of baffles. The 10 grade plugs could be "aspirational" or maybe there are some mods to the engine. Big bore kit, big valves, HC pistons etc.....?
