Jonty, very nice superhawk, it looks to me like someone did a VERY nice restoration, although as far as I know, Honda never used that color paint. JMHO..............................D

Lovely looking CB, Jonty; Very pretty! Has the better looking, if less comfortable flat handlebar. That year would've been fitted with the slightly-raised handlebar. The seat has been re-covered, evident from the slight squashing of the tank 'lip up'.

Beautiful rebuild. The original colour may be revealed by scratching away from the lower edge of one of the rear shock covers, if they are the plastic type; they were (mostly) plastic on the later models; plastic covers were self-coloured, not painted, according to (not always totally correct) documentation.

What a find, with perfectly-matching numbers! Nice one! Although, to me, the frame stamping looks like it could be a bit hookie. The engine casing's number can't be forged, unless a PO obtained an unstamped casing and stamped it himself.

That's interesting - never seen a SuperHawk that has both the frame and engine numbers as being exactly the same. Is that possible?

I've seen (documentary) evidence of identical matches, but only very early CBs -- '61-'63, perhaps.

Hi,

It's statistic logic that there are a few "perfect matching numbers" engine / frame combinations out there.
I'm not completely sure, but it's said that the engines where made in another production line, and where tested before placed in e frame. Not all engines came trough this test, and that's why the numbers between frame and engines are not synchronised. When the gap between the numbers on the cases and frames growth too big, the production just skipped a few numbers, probably the numbers on the engines (but that's the part I'm not sure off, but most likely).

From a mathematical point you could see it as this :

You can see the merging point of the production lines between frames and engines as a place where two numbers are coming together. There's this function of frame number generator which is linear and always succeeding by one digit , and the function of the engine number generator which is also linear, but not always succeeding by one digit, but sometimes makes a step.

If someone knows the last function I would be more than happy to calculate not only the chance, but also how much "perfect matches" are out there.

An educated guess on this from my side it predicting that once in the 2000 to 5000 combinations have this match. I thinks there is a Gaussian curve around that chance, where the top is in fact a the lowest point (or am I'm going way to deep here ?).

I know also a CB72 / 77, in England with this color. It was also imported from the states, and it was a late model. The color is candy red, and the owner wrote to me it was original. I never believed it 100%. Maybe a dealer painted a few this color, especially in the early 70, this was a popular Honda color. I also got a nice picture of that motorcycle, and after comparison it's maybe the same motorcycle.

Can anyone quote on this ?

So that's Candy Red? I always thought this was Candy Red (could be the same, just photo-rendering):

I have only had the bike a few weeks but the chap I bought it from in Cambridge UK seams to think the paint job was original. Phil Denton told me to finish of the model Honda painted some bikes with a metallic finish and chromed some of the parts i.e. Mudguards etc. I have had a good look round the bike including taking the head light, seat and tank off and the only paint I can find is the color you see, there is no other paint under the Red apart from primer. The chap I bought it from also said that the bike was in original condition which is hard to believe as it looks brand new. The bike was shipped to the UK from Arizona in 2000 and has only covered 2000 miles since then, I have all the MOTs. I love the bike and don’t really care whether it original or not but it sure looks good in Candy apple red.
