Thanks for the replies guys...

davomoto....that is what I ended up doing, worked like a charm. I think light tapping might have worked for seals extremely loose (maybe)...but yeah flipping it upside down and have wood around as much of the edge of the aluminum and pulling the shock downward worked out really well...only 2-3 pulls and they both came out.
