Advice on purchase of a 1964 CB77

Post by claytonlc » Sat Mar 08, 2008 6:11 pm

Hello,

I'm new to these bikes, and I'm unsure what to expect for any particular price, so I thought I would ask some advice here. The bike I'm looking at is a 1964 CB77, and the asking price is $1350. It seems to start up nicely, but two primary issues are (1) a rubbing sound in the front hub (bearing?), and (2) it doesn't want to idle on its own (carb?). Here is a link to some photos:

Some other details: missing electric start (see photos) including button at handle bar; incorrect carb filters; non-functioning speedo and odometer (missing cable); missing headlight switch; and the seat appears to be unoriginal. That's all I can remember right now. Any advice on whether I should snatch this up, wait for another, or offer something different would be greatly appreciated, and the sooner the better; Also, what should I expect to spend to replace these parts and have a reliable rider? Thanks!

Questions:
• Have you heard it run?
• Have you driven it?
• Does it shift and hold in all gears?
• How did they start it? (if starter is missing it looks in the picture that the kick starter is missing the foot kick perch.
• Is it leaking oil?
• Does the charging system work?
• Are you planning on total restore or rider?
• Does it have a clean title?
Depending on these answers the highest I would go would be $800.00

Thanks so much for the reply. I did hear it run, but I didn't drive it, so I'm not sure about the gears. It was kick-started - I think the kick perch might be hard to see by the angle of the photograph, though I know it broke at one point and was re-welded. There didn't seem to be any leakage. The charging system seemed fine as the bike started right up and all lights worked, though I think the battery is new. It does have a clean title.

I would like to make it a rider right away, and then do a gradual restoration - not show quality or anything, just something that looks and operates the way it should. Thanks.

Is it worth it? Hmmm... It's got a different seat, shocks, air filters, no horn that I see, different (than stock) rear light I believe as. It's been repainted of course. I guess it depends on how much you really want it. Some one put the low bars on it which I think are kind of cool. If it runs good and rides well that's what counts to me anyway. You can always find the original parts if that is what you want to do.
