ok so i said it., it doesnt take much to confuse me sometimes. I pulled my 65 cb77 apart to clean the oil filter. I pulled the small cover off first and then the hole side cover. To my suprise there was no washer on the filter at all, but i did find it at the bottom of the case just laying loose. I have read where the washer goes but i am still a bit confused. I am just going to post some pics and see if someone would be kind enough to tell me which is the correct way,..

Yep, the middle picture. If you put the shaft into the hole in the cover, you will see the washer will be between the cover and the filter. Check out this thread, I have a picture showing this:

i searched but i dont know how i missed that whole thread. thanks

the first link in the thread has pictures of the precleaned oil filter, the buildup was so even around the filter, i thought it was some kind of gasket in there until i started poking around a little!@

today was the first day i had it running since doing the oil filter mainenance. I put it back together with the washer between the pin and the washer. I have now developed this noise. It sounds like a chain whirling but it only does it when A: i rev the engine, or B: when i put it in gear, it seems to do it worse. I never noticed this prior to cleaning the filter and now it is really noticeable. I took the side cover back apart to check things out and everthing looks ok. I took the oil filter back out, and when i spin it on the shaft it does seem to make a noise when the washer spins with it. has anyone else had this problem? is it possible since the oil filter is clean now it is not dampening the sound? does the oil filter spin all the time while the engine is running or just when it is put in gear? The noise definitely sounds like it is coming from the filter area!
