First post... I need some help with my Oil Pump Chain...

Post by Channcer » Thu May 28, 2009 2:39 pm

I'm very new to this whole Bike fixing thing, and very young to be on the bike I'm on, but I'm in love with the classic 60's style, etc... I've got a '67 (I think) Superhawk that I bought in pieces. The wiring was a mess of random bits someone had thrown in to replace some parts, it has no air filters, someone had put a tiny sparkly gas tank, it had an awful home made looking seat, etc... Well, I managed to get it looking right (the guy who sold it to me had the original parts in boxes in his shed) and rewired the whole thing (ugh) and I think I can make it run as soon as I fix one problem I've found.
I'll preface this by saying the kickstart does not work. It just kind of sticks down at the bottom. If I take the cover off I can reposition it, but it only lasts 10 kicks or so. The electric starter works just fine, but the chain that goes into the oil pump is very loose and clanks against cover causing a horrible racket and preventing me from wanting to touch the start button. I'm wondering how I can fix this aside from replacing the chain (which I can't find anywhere). I can't even find a part number for it. I'm totally lost. Sorry this post was a bit lengthy, It is my first. I hope someone out there can help me out!!! Is there a way to adjust this chain or am I stuck until one pops up on the internet somewhere?

There isn't a chain on the oil pump, but there is a chain that turns the oil filter. The oil pump sits above the oil drain plug. It is removed by removing the 6 bolts around the plate the oil plug is in. The oil filter is in the left engine cover. It's spun by a small chain. It's a bit tricky to get this chain on right. Is it the oil filter chain that is loose?

Post a picture of your project, I am sure everyone would be interested. If you take a picture of the problem area it would also help.

okay, yeah, it's that chain. On one website it was listed as the oil pump chain, so I was going with that. The chain in question is in the right cover under the stator. It is so loose it actually rests on the bottom of the case when it's not moving, and when I hit the starter it just flies all over the place. I bought a chain breaker tool to try to shorten the chain, but I'd rather buy a new one if I can't adjust it at all.

The starter chain looks to be part number 28101-253-000. I see Ohio Cycle has them listed for $20 in the Reproduction and Aftermarket Honda Parts.

awesome!!! Thank you so much. I've got the part list for the CB77 and it said "chain, oil pump" and had two part numbers for it, but I couldn't find them on ohiocycle or olypen. Thank you soooooo much!!! This website has been a huge help for me. I'm just trying to get the bike to run right now, then I might really restore it. Again, thank you so much!!!
