1965 Honda CB77 Project Bike - New Member

Post by miles2912 » Fri Feb 11, 2011 6:35 pm

Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Don and I just bought a farm fresh 65 Superhawk. It has sat out in the rain for a few years uncovered and has a good amount of rust on it. The motor is seized. I tried to push on the kick starter and it will not budge. I was told that the original owner put some oil in the cylinders to keep this from happening but who knows?

I bought the bike pretty cheap so I am not too worried if I can not get it working. My mechanical skills are really sub par and that is the main reason I found an old bike that needed a lot of work to get her running. I plan on pulling everything apart and just go from there, one big learning experience. The bike came with a Chiltons (sp)manual so that will help a lot. Here are some pics, any info would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Don. Looks like a solid starting point. All the important bits are there and you even have a complete front fender, which is rare to find on an unrestored bike. The rest can easily be found either here by asking or on ebay.

Consider buying Bill Silver's engine manual and restoration manual off of this site. It is more detailed and goes over important changes that the bike has experienced through the years, unlike the chiltons.

The forum is going to be your best friend during the process. Makes sure to post pictures as you progress. We're always interested in seeing other projects.

Oh, and post up the VIN number from your frame and engine case number. Someone on here will be able to tell you if it's really a 65 or something else.

Hi Don,

Welcome to the forum. Ditto what cyclon36 said! I just got my 2 Silver books in the mail yesterday and have been voraciously devouring every word. I've already learned a few things that, had I not learned, would have cost me a few back-steps.

BTW, my bike looks exactly the same except for color and pipes (66 CB77). I need to post some update pics.

Best of luck in your new project.

I have the original Pink slip and it says 1965, I will still post up a vin to make sure. It came with a box of parts too. Here is a pic of the stuff. I recognize side covers and air cleaners and spark plugs. The rest is a mystery that I will figure out in due time.

Looks like the rest of the missing parts. Definitely a nice find then.

As for the year, these bikes were often titled and registered the year they were sold instead of the actual year of production. That sometimes varied by several years. Depending on the year span, that could encompass numerous changes in the engine or small cosmetic details. A good reference is finding the year the wire harness was made. There's usually a white tag on the harness under the seat that has the year on it. Also, there is always the chance that the original motor had problems and another one was put in. The motor should have an ID that is close to the frame VIN. They're normally off a bit but not by too much. It should be obvious if they weren't originally together.

Don, welcome to thwe forum! Please edit in your location when you get a chance. Odds are you have a fellow forum memeber that lives close by. Year tag on the wiring harness should be under the gas tank. Part between side covers is upper crankcase cover, goes under the carbs on top of the engine. Rubber part on far left is rear fender mud flap, next to it is rear tank mount. Part to right of spark plugs is battery hold down.

nice find, i just bought a 65 cb77 that has been sitting for a while too, mine was free and making progress, but doesnt have the complete fender (ok by me) came with a ton of extra parts, but not ones i need, like side covers, air filters, air filter tubes. mine is just like that but red (faded to orangeish) with the black tank and weird pipes. as a fellow (fairly) new guy to this forum and working on motorcycles, lots of good info can be found on here using the search function, lots of things have already been answered. good luck!
