Difference Between Types

Post by Steverino » Fri Nov 14, 2014 12:06 am

Hi
Can someone direct me to information regarding the differences between type 1 and type 2 CB77s? Here is a pic of bikes I've restored and the bike I am getting for refurbishing my friends Scrambler. I've restored CA95's and several CB160's but these 305's are new to me. Do all the 77's have the bell crank type of shifter? And does changing foot peg position require a different length rod? I'm not planning on changing the peg position, I'm just curious how it works. Thank you for the info.

Type 2 will be 360 degree crank like the Benly C95 C92. The Superhawk Type 1 has a 180 degree crank. Differences will be the two sets of points and different condensor; Crank and camshaft. Everything else is pretty much the same. The 180 degree engines are said to produce power at higher RPM and rev harder.

The manuals for the 305 discuss both configurations. Nice bikes btw.

VERY nice bikes!

I'm not the authority that others here are, but I'm pretty certain all CB77's (and CB72's) had bell-crank shifters. Placement of the shift lever was an option, rear sets could be used. Yes, you'd need a longer push-pull tube for the rear sets.

Type 1 and Type 2 Differences

Post by Steverino » Fri Nov 14, 2014 3:59 pm

Thank You Waveblaster and Sarals
I was wondering why there is such a big difference in exhaust notes of the CB77's on Youtube. Very Interesting. I wonder why Honda would make such a major change to a model and leave the rest of the bike pretty much unchanged and if any of the bike magazines noted a performance difference back in the day.
Thank You
Steve

The 360 crank I think you could say was "conventional" for the time. Most of the British machines were still using it and the other Hondas of the period seemed to follow suite. As the CB77 was built as the first larger size Honda with sports capabilities I believe it was built around the performance of their race bred machines Isle of Man etc. I would guess they still offered the 360 crank for low speed torque applications, stop start traffic, Japanese domestic, and some of the police versions.
If you haven't read any, I recommmend searching for Bill Silvers blog on examiner. It is a excellent read and I personally look forward to each instalment.

Thank You Waveblaster:
I've started reading Bill Silver's Blog and just finished the flock of Super Hawks story. Very entertaining and informative. Has anyone gone through the youtube CB77's and identified the type 1's verses the type 2? I guess Honda was planning on changing to the 360 crank before they started building the type 1's otherwise they wouldn't of known to put type 1 on the points cover.
