CL77 Seat mount modification

Post by skychs » Tue Jun 28, 2016 3:01 pm

1967 CL77 305 Scrambler

Has anyone come up with a better seat mounting system? There has to be some kind of quick latch/bold/pin system that will make it easier to take off/on the seat.
thanks
chuck

Yes, two friends have done this. They have attached the bolts for the rear mounting thru from the top on the seat brackets and then installed the nuts to hold the bolts tight to the brackets. They drilled the ends of the bolts to take hair pin type clips. This way, they simply slip the seat on, drop the bolts thru the holes in the frame and install the clips.

I don't like this mod because you lose the clamping action on the rear hand rail. But, if you need a quick release seat, this will accomplish that.

regards,
Rob

Old post, buy why not reverse the position of the bolts? Bring the bolt up from the underside, nut on the top to clamp the hand rail. Make the bolt long enough to go through the seat brackets, add a washer, then slip your pin through a hole in the bolt.

??????????

Now that I have another CL77 to play with, decided to fix the issue that Mr. Smith asked about.

What I did:
Two 5/16" clevis pins, heads shinnied down to lower the profile and make it flatter, shortened to accommodate the thickness of the seat mount rubber, new clip hole for the clip pin drilled.

8 mm flange head bolts with their heads machined down flat to lower the profile and to provide a better surface to weld to.

Welded the clevis and the bolt together, secured in frame with a lock washer and a flange nut. which pinches the rear grab rail tight.

I put the hole for the pin a little further up than I like, but shouldn't be an issue.

Thank you. This has been bugging me ever since I first read Chuck’s note before I acquired this bike. Can’t remember any such issue on the one I had back in the late 60’s.

It needs a little finesse work done to clean it up, but I really need to stop fooling with this frivolous stuff and try to figure out why the bike wants to seriously bog down under load at anything past ¾ throttle. No load she revs fine.

BUT

That’s a topic for a different thread
