This evening, I replaced the knuckle with one that has better splines, and it seems to have solved the problem. I got to hear the bike run for the first time, and other than a hail of sunflower seeds(!) from the muffler, it sounded good and settled right into a nice idle. Thanks to all for their suggestions.
