You should pull that piece out of the cover and check it out, if slipped on the spline it's likely cracked.

+1 with Mike................remove the 10mm cap-bolt to release any remaining spring-tension............then the clip...........Examine closely..........cracks are sometimes hidden. Pay attention to the spring for proper re-assembly.
