A question of originality
A question of originality
I have a 1964 CL72. I have a bead on a unbobed front fender and a tailight lens both of which are on my needs list. The fender is described as steel chromed, uncut. These fenders were not chromed originally, correct? So this fender must be off another bike? In addition my side cover are also chromed, so I think those may have come off another bike and just happen to fit. Please let me know your thoughts on what was original on these bikes and where these chrome bits may have come from....

Re: A question of originality
As LM said, CL72s came with '8-hole' aluminum fenders. Later CL77s had chrome plated steel fenders but the mounting holes were reduced to 6 with just two mating with the center brace at the middle, instead of 4.
Pretty sure that the CL77 steel fender will fit the CL72 brace (I tried the opposite recently) and you just need to put the extra holes in. If you strip the chrome and re-paint it silver it will 'look' pretty original but won't be an aluminum one which are pretty hard to find in nice condition.

I have one spare alloy front fender for the '62-'64 250 Scramblers. The first-year and some part of the second-year production were 'brush' finished alloy which many owners proceeded to polish to a near-chrome 'shine'. Later production had silver paint finish. My spare fender is a good candidate for a paint finish with minor metal work. No cracks or weld-repairs. All fastener mounts are in-place. $200 plus shipping from Wisconsin. I could forward pics by email if interested.
