clattering noise

Post by raydike » Sun Apr 07, 2019 10:45 am

Hello everyone, I'm finishing the restoration of my 61 C77. Went for a test ride today but found that the engine makes some clattering noise, it seems from the left side. This happens at speeds over 70 kph. When accelerating it disappears. On the highway it is quite strong. The connecting rods don't have any play nor do the small ends. I replaced the primary chain and the camshaft chain. It sounds a bit like a chain hitting the case but I can't figure out where. Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi raydike;

Have you adjusted the cam chain tensioner, or taken off the side case and checked to see if it is indeed rubbing?

Yes I did but will do again to check. Must be a chain.

What about the kickstarter shaft...? Just thinking...

My Puch 250 kickstarter has a bad habit of falling down when I'm riding - I haven't gotten around to draining it and opening it up yet - and I'm thinking I might have to wind the spring tighter; it clatters a bit when it does, and goes away when I reach down and pull it back up.

Might be something...

The thing is that the noise disappears when accelerating which could be linked to a chain getting more tension. Or it could be piston slap. I will try retard the ignition a bit that would reduce piston slap, just for testing.
