I put some new transmission parts in my CA77 (Thanks LoudMouse!) and buttoned it up but have noticed something that Wasn't There Before -
When I rotate the generator to time it, the kickstarter will twitch, almost like its hitting a detent or something. It didn't do it before, and the gears all rotated smoothly when I rebuilt the transmission... I have the kickstarter set at about 11:00 o'clock, but it's nagging at me that the Kickstarter position might have something to do with it...but I am open to suggestions...
Also, I have noticed that if I turn the main generator bolt by hand, as if you were trying to time it, that allows you to manually turn the KS shaft by hand to the right/clockwise, and it clicks until it stops; rotate the generator some more, and you can turn the KS shaft some more. The KS shaft will not turn to the left/counterclockwise, at least by hand.
Install the right cover with the Kickstarter in place, and you Can turn it over with the kickstarter itself; it only 'bumps', or jumps when you turn the generator bolt...is the KS shaft just not down far enough in it's hole in the cover? I can turn the engine over with the Kickstarter, it's only when I turn the generator bolt that I get that 'jump', and I think if I fired the engine with it as-is, that would be a bad thing......
Would this have anything to do with how many turns to make on the kickstarter spring when re-installing the right cover...? Could I have wound it too tight, or not enough?

Kickstarter 'Twitches' - SOLVEDFirst of all, A HUGE Can-Never-Thank-You-Enough thanks to LoudMouse for helping me diagnose this problem, which turned out to be a screwy kickstarter pawl which was somehow put in Upside down at some point in it's life.
LM's advice was inestimable in getting this problem corrected, and with his help I now have an intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the CA77 transmission and an expanded understanding of zen and my patience threshold. Opening the engine four times in two days will do that to ya. It used to take me about an hour to drop and open the engine - now I can do it in 20 minutes! "There's never enough time to do it right, but always enough time to do it three or four times." Thanks LM. I will keep your number on speed-dial. :) -John
