kick start slip (not clutch related)

Post by versuspop » Thu Jun 25, 2009 7:09 am

My kick starter slips when i kick the bike over. not freely like the clutch is engaged, but with a noise like the grooves on the pawl are slipping past the groves in the "kick starter joint" (28241-259-000)--the part that fits over the shaft.

the pawl groves are not twisted or bent.
the noise seems external. (right inside the cover, not deeper in the engine).

after it slips, it stays in the back swing position (down) and does not come back to rest in its normal spot.

nothing weird happening when i use electric starter (other than another problem where the bike won't idle! another post though...)

I must assume ya have a DREAM engine.
Remove the case cover and look at the end of the Kick Shaft (splines) and/or the splines in the Kick Starter Joint. ............lm

I realize this post is a bit dated, but I seem to be having a similar issue. Until recently my kick starter has worked flawlessly. Now I am experiencing an issue which sounds close to what is described below.
My kick starter slips when i kick the bike over. not freely like the clutch is engaged, but with a noise like the grooves on the pawl are slipping past the groves in the "kick starter joint"
Unlike the original post, my kick start DOES return to it's normal position. I still a newbie to working on bikes but would rather figure this one out than take it in. I've ordered the Motor Tuning, Repair and Maintenance Guide by Bill Silver but wold love to start working on this before it comes in.

I have yet to remove the case cover and look at the end of the Kick Shaft (splines) and/or the splines in the Kick Starter Joint as I'm not totally sure what I'm looking for. Suggestions? Thanks guys!

Don't be afraid to take the right side cover off... not a lot in there to screw up.
go slow and make sure not to strip the screws. use an impact driver to get it off...

as far as my kick not returning to normal...I had loaded the spring backwards...
all better, other than that my kick still slips....

i have other tranny issues so while I have the cases split, i am going to replace the kick shaft...
