OIL WEIGHT

Post by ROBM50 » Sat Mar 13, 2010 9:52 pm

Hi guys,
I believe I was ill advised that 40 weight oil would be okay to use during a recent oil change. Now when I change gears, there is a sluggish delay before gears totally engage. Does this sound about right and will changing oil out and replacing with the engine case specified weight of 30 or 20 do the trick? Thanks in advance! Rob

Rob,
Volumes and volumes have been written on these very pages about oils and which one is the best to use. However 40w may have been a bit too heavy for these old bikes. Honda recommended in the day 30 non detergent and it does work well even today. Although some people call it a gate hinge oil, LM recommends it cuz it does not suspend the crud for the oil cleaner to work properly. That said, there are an equal number of folks here who believe a more modern blend formulated for the wet clutch is superior. Personally I like/use both and can tell the difference in the way they perform. At this point I'll not render an opinion either way except to say that 40w could be a bit heavy. IMHO RW
