Hi Graham,

I've seen it before, a wiring harness with a next or previous year than the engine or some other indications say. It could be build in January or December for example. What's the date on the paperwork ?

My own CB400f is build in November 1974 (it's on the tag on the frame, but sold here in march 1975
I know that it was sold directly after it was delivered into the store (this was a first owner bike and I know the owner).

That means that it takes around 3 to 4 months to get from the factory into the shop

Jensen

Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately no paperwork at all with this bike but I am hoping to trace it's history through the public records office in Coventry where it was first registered, then get it re-registered with the same number.

What interested me was that the wiring harness carried a date which was earlier than the frame number would suggest.

The Honda factory closes in August each year, assumably to re-tool for the next years model. Any bike manufactured after August, is the next years model, as evidenced by Jensens CB400f. This is very obvious with the bikes starting in 1968, as they have a tin plate on the frame with manufacture date, and model year. The tag on the wiring harness will tell you what year the wiring harness was manufactured, not necessarily the year of the bike. Also the wiring harness is not permanately affixed to the bike, and are changed out and or replaced on some bikes, while the VIN number is permanantly stamped in to the frame.

Davo

Thanks for that - just like the English factories. This particular bike has not been tampered with by Humans since the mid-sixties. It has, however been influenced very heavily by the English weather!!
