New Guys Basic Questions

Post by mvrk10256 » Tue May 25, 2010 9:08 pm

Hi guys, I have a friend who bought a 305 dream about 8 months ago, put new tire and a new battery on the bike and never used it. It has been sitting in the parking lot of our apartment building for 8 months. there was some gas in the tank. When he bought it, the bike ran.

He gave me the bike for free since he was moving and knew i am mechanically oriented. I am looking to fix it and learn to ride on it.

Currently the bike does not run. so here go the questions

1.The key was broken off at the base so i can put the end of the key in the ignition with pliars and turn it, I will be visiting a locksmith shortly to get a new one made. However I do not know what the key positions are. I seem to have 5 different ones. Can someone please give me a rundown of the key positions?

2. I am a car guy but this is my first bike, and my first vehicle older than the 90's so i need to do a few things to get it running.
a. Oil change + filter - i plan on using honda 20w-40 is this ok? i saw the rant thread about oil... also is the oil filter paper/plastic? people say to clean it not replace it? confused?
b. i plan on pulling the tank, dumping the old gas and then cleaning out the inside of the tank? anything i should know about this?
c. do they sell a carb rebuild kit for this bike? what make and model carb do i have? it faces towards the back ofthe bike on the backsides of the heads right?
d. what needs to be done with the distributor? new points? where do i get plugs?
e. are there any fuses on the bike? cause i could not find them :(

is there anything else i need toknow?

sorry if this is redundant of other posts but i would greatly appreciate the answers to the questions .

I don't mean to sound cruel or unwelcoming, but I think you and your Dream will benefit far more from getting to know your machine than from having a few basic questions answered. You received the bike as a gift, so now it's your turn to invest some time and effort in learning about it. Use the search feature on this site--all your answers are there, and hundreds more.

I dont get you guys. i couldnt really find an DIY or anything of the sort. and now i understand. you guys prefer to f**ck the new guy. for instance its kinda bloody hard to figure out the key positions on a NON RUNNING BIKE.

it is a shame that you guys are not more forthcoming. I think its stupid to let other people stumble and make the same damn mistakes you did. or are you simply trying to sell people shit and thats all your concerned about. do you guys get cuts on the profit made from books and so are tight lipped?

i dont need any parts yet. like i said the bike just needs basic maintenance, thats all.
