Newbie with a few questions...

Post by bh325es » Tue Oct 26, 2010 8:33 pm

Hi all,

I recently acquired a (not sure of the year yet) Honda Dream. I know its a CA77 from the stamping on the engine block. It was my grandfathers and it has been in a garage for the past 28 years. He recently passed away and I would like to try to bring it back to life. I really fell in love with the look of this thing as it isn't in bad shape at all. The engine runs freely and I believe it won't take much to get it running again. Thats where you guys come in. I'm not that familiar when it comes to motorcycles, but that doesn't mean I have never turned a wrench.

First off, the year. I'll include a picture to get opinions on the year. The reason I don't have the exact year is because the title has been misplaced over the years.

Secondly, I want to begin working on it this weekend. Any tips to doing this properly would be great. There wasn't any gas in it when it was stored which should be a plus. Another thing is if anyone could take a picture of the back of their engine and post it. There were lines that were very badly dry rotted and had broken off and i can't tell where they went. They started at the top of the piston casing and there were 2 of them.

Any input would be greatly appreciated and i'm sure i'll be back with questions as soon as I begin getting my hands dirty with it.

Thanks Again.

Lovely looking bike. If you get the engine and chassis numbers it will be much easier to date. The chassis number is on the lower left hand side of the frame below the stoplight switch near the stand pivot.

If you use the search function on the forum you shoul find answers that the experts here have provided and refined many times over.

Welcome to the forum...
Don't worry about the lines, you can just remove them if you want...they were discontinued on later years anyway.
They are supposed to be valve guide breathers...I just leave mine open
If you have a stock air filter, there should be to holes for them to connect to.
Good luck!

Or you can just link the two spigots with a short length of tubing.

Welcome along; a great inheritance you have there!

Thanks for the compliments and advice. Thats a simple fix. I took the old air filter out and it seems like some kind of critter made it into a home so I doubt i'll be using it. I bought a cheap air filter that clamps right on to the carb, just something quick to get it running.

Judging by the clutch cable your bike is 65 or older. Post the frame and engine serial numbers as was suggested. Very nice bike btw.

I'll be sure to do that hopefully by tomorrow. My family told me it was a 65 but it wasn't ever certain. The VIN number is CA77E-401297. I've read that the E meant there was a small change to something which put around 65 or later right before they changed it to CA78. Thanks again on the compliments.
