Both of mine are stainless. One is a bit beat on the bottom but you only notice it if you are laying on the ground so I think I'll leave them. (1962 built bike)

Post by KellieLyyne » Mon Apr 18, 2011 8:57 pm

okay well I did the "magnet test" and it stuck so I guess they are steel. Thanks for all the help.

Be careful with the magnet test as there are magnetic and non-magnetic types of stainless. I think that Honda mufflers were made from a stainless that wasn't very stainless and can also rust.

See that is the problem, it LOOKS like stainless, and there is nooooooooo rust on these things, just a few small dents and dings. So that is why I was asking. They came off a 1963 Dream. <shrug> Well, I know a guy who owned a chrome shop, I will take one to him and ask him if he can tell. Thanks gentlemen for all your help.

magnetic mufflers

Post by jleewebb » Fri Apr 22, 2011 10:23 am

a local expert told me one of my mufflers is stainless, other plain chromed steel. both were attractive to magnet, stainless one just a little less than plain steel one...i do remember one of my mufflers breaking off like lm described just behind the mount back in the day (mid 60s). sure was loud. both mufflers were cracked near the mounts when I began ressurection, had 'em brazed, holding up so far. --Lee

Hi,

That's correct, but the difference in magnetic force is significant (to me)
