Headlight....

Post by KellieLyyne » Tue Apr 26, 2011 6:28 pm

Does anyone have an old burned out sealed beam headlight that they care to part with for an early Dream (1963)?

Mike - not to hijack the thread, but do you happen to have the instructions for modifying the light to take a replaceable halogen bulb??

dream headlight

I posted instructions here a few years back. It's not too difficult.

1. Just get a Dremel cutoff disc and cut the back off of the bulb.
2. Carefully break out the old inner bulb with a phillips screwdriver and shake out the broken pieces.
3. I used a large plastic plumbing nut that the halogen bulb will fit into, and epoxy it. Then epoxy the unit to the bulb.
4. You will have to bend the prongs on the bulb flat because there isn't a whole lot of room in the housing.

Pm your email address and I'll send you a pic of one that's ready to put a halogen bulb in.

Halogen headlight

Mike,

Doesn't the filament of the bulb have to be the correct distance into the reflector to focus the beam? How did you deal with that?

I haven't tried the bike on a night ride but the beam doesn't look too bad standing still. This is just a fix that will get your bike inspected and on the road on the cheap.
With the dinky taillights on these bikes I'm afraid to ride my Dream at night, but I might give it a try sometime this summer.
