New Dream owner....updated info and PICS!Glad you guys think it already looks better.
I did some work yesterday on it and found a few things that I am a bit nervous about. First off someone has been doing some creative wiring on it. Looks like they extended the wires from the battery area up to the headlight area. Maybe it had bad wiring and they just tried to replace it, but either way it is pretty messy. I also found the headlight has been cut up and the bulb was removed. It has an 1156 socket duct taped into it. So needless to say the wiring needs fixed and I'll need a new headlight for sure. I also found that I am missing some parts in the carb, and the float is bent badly. I will need to source a good carb and will need a throttle cable as well. It is also missing all air filtration equipment from the carb back. It has no air filter, airbox lid, tube, etc. So I thin I will have to try and run one of those pod filters on it if I can get a good carb. The worst of all is it appears the fuel tank has been jb welded on the bottom. I think it is still holding gas, but it has definitely been messed with, so there goes my good gas tank. At this point I am wondering if I Gould just cut the losses and sell the bike for parts? I only have $400 in it, so I am sure I can make that back. What do you guys think? Keep in mind I will need to get all of the other common stuff too, like tires, seat cover, tune up parts, etc as well. Advice would be great!!! Thanks! If I were closer I'd cut your losses. LOL Headlights are hard to come by. You might be better off seeing if you can work up a solution with yours. I haven't looked the threads up but I've seen people note about how others have converted their headlight to run bulbs. Much cheaper.
Again, I haven't needed them but I got a bunch of carb parts with mine. I believe they are all readily available. Filters are cheap (as long as you go aftermarket as you note). Throttle cables are available. I got an extra one with mine when I bought it. I once ran a tank that had been JB welded for a long time. It's still JB welded. We really can't tell you what to do. You either have the time and inclination to get it running or not. I've sold projects before because I just didn't have the time or the desire any longer. I'd hope it could stay together though. Could you buy a running bike for what you will end up in this one? Yeah, problably............Nothing like the first time you get one running that hasn't for years though. Don't give up too easy....You can find the parts you need to make a decent daily rider at reasonable cost if you are patient enough to look.
The wiring is actually pretty simple and you could even make your own harness if necessary. If the motor turns over with good compression and the trans shifts thru the gears you are still in good shape. Post what you need and there is a good chance someone here has it or can tell you where to get it. 66 dream, 78 cb750k, 02fz1, 09 wing
Well I found a wire harness last night on ebay for about $20 and got it coming. That should solve my issue of the wiring, but I still need a carb in a bad way.
I am looking at a few sources and hope to come up with a carb. I think that will be a deal breaker. If I can get a good carb I will probably keep it and plug along with the project. Otherwise, I have a guy chomping at the bit to buy this from me for parts on a project he is working on. I hate to sell it that way, but he is restoring another one identical to mine and needs quite a few parts from mine to get his finished. I dunno.....Im going to keep looking for a carb, and if I find one for reasonable im going to keep at it....if not it might for parts. Ill keep everyone posted with the result!
I wouldn't give up quite yet. Carbs show up on Ebay pretty often. There's one on there right now. Your initial investment isn't very high. I bought a similar bike in February for $1200. Everything was there, but it needed tires, air cleaner, seat cover, grips, peg rubbers, battery, etc. It seems like a lot of the CA77s are being parted out, and it's sad to see a potential runner converted into parts.
Well guys it looks like the bike is going to be more than I am going to handle on my own.....
So a guy from Wisconsin is coming tomorrow morning to buy it from me. He called and we had a lengthy discussion about it. He already owns a white 1966, and a blue 1966, and is trying to get a black one and a red one to finish his "collection". I feel good that he is going to fully restore this bike, so I know its going to a good home. I am to the point if he doesnt come and give me my asking price for it, I am going to keep it and start the task of getting it running, no matter what it takes. But....he already sent me a deposit to hold it, so it sounds pretty much like a done deal. Ill keep everyone posted with what happens tomorrow...... And the bike is now sold to a new owner. Hopefully he has better resources and time than I have, I wish him and the bike well!
