Steering Lock Removal?

G'day Guys

Any hints as how to remove the steering lock out of the frame on a '64 C72?

Just in the process of preparing the frame for painting (or powder coating) and it is the last thing left. I've removed the cover and the steering lock seems to wiggle in the housing but I'm reluctant to get too aggressive with it. Is supposed to just slip out with the cover removed?

Also wondering if anyone knows where to get the N code keys cut to suit?

I could be wrong but i think you need to turn the key a certain way with the cover off to remove the lock. Atlas Some of the older locksmiths may have blanks. We were lucky we found one that did.

Hmmm, thanks Atlas. I just tried that without any luck, in fact found out another interesting thing. Even though the ignition switch and steering lock are numbered the same, the key only works in the ignition. I reckon the key/switch may be worn just enough so that the key won't work in the steering lock. Open to other suggestions? Looks like I may have to try and find someone to cut a new key.

Any other ideas for getting the steering lock out most welcome. It may have to go to the painters in place.

Hi Muddy

There's a little brass stud which operates in the groove when you twist the key. You can either (if you're lucky) unscrew it with a small screwdriver, or smack it with a punch (to break it off) and drill / re-tap afterwards.

My error - I was thinking about CB72. From your picture, it looks like you have to press that little steel strip upwards and it should release the lock barrel.
