Oil pump sprocket--is it supposed to look "blued"?
Still looking for that ticking sound. I took the side cases off and the primary and starter chains are OK. the primary chain has some stretch to it, but nothing that would account for the noise I'm hearing. The only thing that looked odd was that the oil pump gear had a bluish tint to it from the teeth down to the circular holes. I'm not sure if it was heat treated at the factory, or if it overheated while the engine was running. The pump itself is in very good condition.

Like Jensen says it is made that way.
If any of the gaskets had been missing the gears could wear but I think you need to look farther. ......lm
