1964 Honda Dust Shields and Gas Tank Logos
1964 Honda Dust Shields and Gas Tank LogosHello all...I'm new here and just got a 1964 Dream 305 from the barn it sat in for 30 years. It has 714 original mikes and according to the VIN it is a 1964 (I) frame and engine. Two very quick questions. The first is where can I find a set of the dust shields (with grommet and associated hardware)?
As to the second question I cannot seem to get a good answer (or I get conflicting ones). What is the color and design of the gas tank Honda emblem? I have figured out that it is the 71 mm badge, but is it gold or silver (I've seen both)? In addition to the Honda wing, does it say "Dream," "Dream 305," "300," or does it have the wing with the "HM oval? Many thanks for any input on both questions.
Re: 1964 Honda Dust Shields and Gas Tank LogosIf you actually have a 1964 the badges will show Honda Dream 300 and new they were bronze/gold.
Ultra violet light changes that to silver over time. Dust shields are difficult to locate but do come on eBay at times. Usually pricy if the seller knows what they are worth. .......lm
I have yet to see any data as to the actual year of change however I've seen many 1964 bikes with Sun Baked Dream badges. .............lm
There can be no doubt that LM deserves enormous deference on any topic relating to 305's. But, I think the real answer is it is hard to tell with absolute certainty what badges came on what bike and there will likely be differences of opinion. Nonetheless, there is "something written somewhere" as Paul has asked. Unfortunately it is in the Honda literature and no matter where you look in Honda literature there is incorrect, conflicting or missing information regarding the change from CA77 to CA78 models in mid 1963. I think everyone agrees that early "Emblems", or badges, said "Dream 300" under the "Honda" and that the later badges just said "300". I understand that the badges that just say "Dream" under the "Honda" came on dry sump models prior to 1960. The part number for the "Emblems" in my '66 manual is 87121-279-810 (R) (CY788811)and 87122-279-810 (L) (CY788812) The middle number "279" is the product code for C78 so those would be late badges. In my 1960 parts manual, the page with the part numbers for the exploded view of that tank is missing so I don't have a part number for the early badges, but it would seem to me it should have a 266 model code in the middle for a CA77. All of this leads me to conclude that if you have a CA77 (up to mid 1963) your badges should say "Dream 300" and if you have a CA78 your badges should say "300". Edit: Per Bill Silver the part number for the "Dream 300" badges is 87121(2)-266-000. LM has seen what he has seen and I don't question that. Perhaps Honda continued to use their early badges and put them on CA78's and maybe that lasted into 1964. That is, maybe the "Dream 300" badges that LM has seen on CA78's were in fact original badges to those bikes. Or, maybe the original "300" badges broke or fell off very soon (as they are prone to do) and the dealer replaced them with early badges he had in his parts bin. So, maybe what LM has seen are early badges that replaced the original late badges and the sun baked. Lord knows it doesn't take long. If anyone has a CA78 that he is sure is original and has the "Dream 300" badges, I hope you will let us know. At the end of the day, unless you are going to show your bike amongst some very rigorously judged competition, it probably doesn't matter too much. Even then, you might win the debate no matter which side you end up on. I like things to be original, so I obsess over these details. Everyone on this website has seen me get pretty anal. I guess it is kind of humorous to have a bunch of old farts spending so much time and effort trying to determine what it should say on a plastic badge. I think Dreams are just beautiful bikes, especially when the chrome shines and you can see your reflection in the paint. If that is your bike, no one is going to say it is not beautiful because of what your badges say (unless you are competing in a show with a guy who has the other badges). In fact, before I dug in on the "correct badge" issue, I bought a set of reproduction "Dream 300" badges for my '64 because I mistakenly thought they were correct for all Dreams and the "300" badges were for Superhawks and Scramblers. This thread has made me decide to put them on just to see who will notice. I doubt anyone will ever say a word. If anyone ever does say anything I will have found someone that I can spend countless hours with discussing the finer points of Honda trivia. (Too bad it won't be LM as he will mistakenly think they are correct.....lol).
Thanks to all for the feedback...its funny as my bike is the first (of three as I understand it) production runs for the 1964 CA78. I would not be surprised if they were using up older stock with regards to the emblems. I'm going to go with the "Dream 300" in gold as that looks to be the right one for the Touring model. I'd still like to be stopped if it isn't correct and I inadvertently commit a carnal sin, lol...
