Speedo Troubleshooting

Post by mcmig » Fri Oct 04, 2013 11:24 am

Hi,

I bought my 1967 CA77 a couple months ago, the speedometer is not working, the needle goes up about half an inch at full speed. How do I know if it's not the cable or Speedo drive before narrowing down to the speedo itself, and opening it up for nothing....

BTW I can repair a lot of things, but I am not a certified mechanic, therefore I am clueless when it comes down to this kind of troubleshooting....

Thank you,

Mike

Put the bike on its stand. Pull the speedo cable off the speedo and check that it rotates when you spin the wheel by hand. Does it look like it's slipping at all?

Examine both ends of the cable to check for damage...

Re-attach at the speedo and remove at the wheel. Noting which direction it should rotate (from the previous test) attach a variable speed drill to the free cable end. Run slowly at first and then gently increase.

These devices usually show around 60mph around 2200 rpm

If you cannot work out what is happening, report back with the results.....

Have you pulled the cable out from the bottom and put white grease on it?. ...........lm
