My bike was the same - engine number listed as VIN. The number on the frame was very hard to find and the engine number was EASY to find.

I changed the registration to list the frame number as the VIN number

Up here, you just go in to the DMV with the correct information and they change it in the computer and print a new registration.

Engine No.

Dianne, my 65 dream came the same way. I have a new title and an old one from 1978 that show the engine no. My concern is a future motor swap would screw things up. I think I'll try to get it switched at DMV..............................D

Engine number vs Frame Number

Post by conbs » Wed Jan 27, 2016 6:31 pm

I researched this a while back and VIN numbers were not required by federal law until 1968. There were increasing requirements that Dream frame numbers do not meet. Your state will likely call it a VIN number but, it is just a frame number.

As usual, LM is probably right that you will be okay. The reality is that it would virtually impossible for you to come up with a title that matched your engine number if it wasn't the title for your bike (even if it has a different frame number).

That said, I went through a bit of an issue several years ago with a bike I bought. The guy at the DMV here actually owns a Dream that was his dad's so he is familiar with the difference between the frame number and the engine number. He knew right where to look. You will be better off if you take the issue to the DMV yourself and ask them to help you get it sorted out. That way when the bike is transferred to someone else there won't be any issue. Selling a bike with a fictitious title is fraud and a felony in my state. No one needs that kind of trouble.
