Just bought my first dream 305 with problems

Post by Slo4sho » Sun Feb 07, 2016 7:40 pm

I just picked up a 64 Ca77 dream 305 off of eBay. Seller said it looks and runs perfect. I got the the guys house and it needs a new paint job and when he fired it up it ran but only on choke. It was also white smoking out of the exhaust and smelled like it was burning oil. I got him to knock $500 off the price and loaded it up and got it home.

Got it home checked the oil, turned the gas on and kicked it twice and it started right up. Had to leave it chocked or it would die so i rode it down the road and it died about a block from the house. So I kicked and kicked and kicked but would not start. So I pushed it home and removed the carb cleaned it out checked the plugs, has strong spark but now I can't get it running.

I've had a ton of mopeds but have no idea where to start on this thing.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks

Jesse

Start with the petcock. With the gas line disconnected from the carb, the gas should run freely. Let it run for about 10 seconds to make sure it keeps a good steady stream. If not remove the bowl and make sure the screen is good and clean. Check all those passages in the petcock. If you decide to remove the petcock, make sure you have a JIS screwdriver (or tip) or you will cam out the heads of the mounting screws. You will become even more frustrated if you do.

If you get a steady stream from the petcock, then the carb has a problem. While it is apart make sure the low idle jet is clear. It has a tiny little hole. Make sure the float moves really freely and isn't hanging up on the side of the bowl or the bowl gasket.

Also, while you are trying to start it, connect a 2 amp charger to the battery.

The above assumes you have the points adjusted properly and the timing set dead on.
