ca77 battery cover fitting

Post by vespaguy » Tue Nov 27, 2007 10:15 pm

the battery side over on my '67 ca77 doesnt fit quite like I think it should.

It is the same general shape as the raised bits of the frame that it rests on, and the holes for the hold-down knob line up properly.. so I think that it is the correct cover.

where the problem lies is at the bottom... The tab along the bottom of the cover looks as though it should lock into the outside rim of the battery tray. The problem with that idea is that the battery tray is considerably narrower than the tab along the bottom of the cover.

To fix this, a previous owner notched the covers lower edge approx 1.5 inches from the right side to allow it to fit around the right edge of the battery tray. Now the covers lower bit fits into the bottom of the battery bracket.

Also of interest: originally, there was was something else spotwelded onto the far left and right sides of the lower rail of the battery tray. what ever used to be there has since broken off.

I have probably made this sound much more confusing than it really is. If this is the case, let me know and I will shoot a couple photos of the situation.

Now... at long last... the question: How should this thing fit? Can anyone shed some light on how this should fit, or have a close up photo of an unmodified battery tray & cover?

cheers,
brent

Sounds like you have an early model cover on a later model bike. The battery size and cover was changed around 65' to a smaller battery.Your right ,there should be a another piece welded to the front edge of the tray for the bottom lip of the cover to slip into.If you want a photo let me know.Joe

After taking a long hard look at mine, and comparing it to some examples on ebay, you are absolutely correct. Thank you.
