Re-Pinning The Cam Chain?

Post by Dr. Frankenstein » Fri Aug 11, 2017 7:19 am

I'm looking for options here - I just got a new cam chain for another 305 I'm rebuilding, but (despite measuring it again and again) STILL managed to cut it too long, by ONE link.

Where the master link SHOULD go, I'm too long by a half-link; If I take out just one more link, it will be a half-link too Short!

Can I / would it be a good idea to (A) just re-pin the link I took out and re-cut the chain, (B) reconnect the two pieces with a clip-type master link, measure it again and recut it, adding a Second clip-type master link, or (C) just buy another 219H chain - (pricey)...

I have researched this exact dilemma on line, and everybody seems to have an opinion, but not an answer, so I thought I would check here.

Again, the chain is brand new, never used - not stretched at all. Seems a horrible waste to just have to toss it.

Ideas?

-John

John

They always appear too short when new. This is what I did....

Tighten the head down with some spacers and put the link on.

Hi Gman;

I hope you're right, and I'll try it, but I don't know...there's not much room to play with there.

Currently I have the two 'open' ends of the chain (where I took the pin out) fighting for the same spot on the sprocket...it's like, if I lay one whole end of the chain into the sprocket, I still have about one-half of the other open-end able to overlap it...they Should be laying right next to each other so I can get the master link in there.

But! If I take out one more link, it will definitely be too short, by one notch...That's why I'm trying to explore all my options. I'll try to post a picture a bit later(shhh...I'm at work right now...;)

That's the same chain breaker I have, btw...
