New CA77 Honda Dream 305 owner in need of advice

Post by olde-goat » Fri Jul 06, 2018 8:09 am

Hello, I just purchased a few Honda Dream CA77 305 motorcycles, best that I can determine is that they are 65's. I was only looking for one bike but due to receiving a deal that I could not refuse I ended up buying all three in a package deal. Number one is complete and am told is a running bike but unsure as to when it was last started, number two bike is 90% complete no history of being started, number three is 60% complete but disassembled engine. My history is in restoring cars and am getting to the stage in my life that I still want to work/restore something motorised but stay on a smaller scale. I do not have a lot of previous history with motorcycles. My plan is to restore the number one and eventually number two bikes. I am considering to at least start number one bike before I disassemble and begin the restoration process. Any advice as to how I should prep the bike prior to starting. Also if someone sees a flaw in my plan please let me know. Thanks to anyone willing to take the time to respond.

Drain the oil, remove the left side cover and remove the oil filter and clean it. Remove the clutch and clean the plates. Give the chains an inspection. Replace the side cover with a new gasket. Remove, check and clean the oil pump and replace with new gaskets. Refill with fresh oil. Clean the carbs. Make sure the gas tank is clean or plan on using a gas bottle. New plugs, check the points. Clean or replace, then set the static timing. Adjust the valves. Adjust the cam chain tensioner. Crank it.

My usual process on a bike like this is all seadogs advice to get her running. Then get her road worthy as best as possible and ride enough to get a feel for potential weak spots you may need to focus on. That's my 2 cents worth at least.Rusty
