100% newbie: How to release the seat?

Post by OilDrip » Thu Nov 15, 2018 3:10 pm

Hello,

I have just purchased an old rusty CB72 (1963) and has planned to spend the winter getting it up and running. I have not yet ordered a copy of owner's manual or a workshop manual.

Today, I have removed the exhaust, one side shield and will now remove the tank in order to clean it up. I assume that the ignition lock also locks the seat. Correct? Only one key came with the bike; the key can switch between the three different positions in the cylinder, though it seems like the key could break anytime (I have ordered a new key). My question is how to release the seat? If the ignition lock clamps the seat down, what way to turn the key in order to release the seat?

Thanks in advance for your kind assistance!

CB72 seat removal

Nothing as sophisticated as a seat lock on these bikes!

The key / ignition switch has NO connection at all with the seat which is simply held in place, or should be, by two extended bolts, one each side at the rear end of the seat.

Loosen the bolts, no need to take them right out, just loosen about 1/2 inch or so and the seat will simply pull backwards, releasing the front from its Locating pegs, then it should just lift off.

Of course all this assumes that you have a standard, unmodified seat up that hasn't been 'modified' by a previous owner at some time in the last fifty years!

Good Luck
