Nevernotbusy, here is another quick check you can make. If you have no spark on a dream, check the brake light; horn and signal flasher. They are all on the same 12v circuit as the coil. If there is any failure you likely have an open circuit/high resistance in the black wire. Start at the ignition switch and go from there.

Great, thanks. Actually this might be a bit of an AH-HA perhaps. But I don't believe the brake light is working + the horn is disconnected.

I just poked my head into the wiring coming from the ignition switch, and there is one black wire that I can see which is unplugged, likely from the horn. I didn't catch a glimpse of any other unplugged wires just yet. I do know that the horn button and switch on the left hand grip are currently not wired to anything.

I see now that the problem might be more complex than the coil (Isn't that often the case).

My horn is not connected, the brake light is not working, and the bike has no turn lights. If that's all running on the same circuit, then I've gotta get in there and start making connections it seems.

forget about the horn and the brake light and the turn signal. simply turn on the ign switch and check for voltage at the points. then proceed with a calm, reasoned diagnose of your problems.

UPDATE!

Post by nevernotbusy » Fri Oct 17, 2014 6:14 pm

Updates from the field!

I ran through the wiring, and reconnected the horn to the rest of the circuit + the handlebar button and now the horn's working + front light.

No rear brake light working yet: Although the voltmeter read around 2 or so volts back there.

Now the most exciting news: ++I got spark!++

Points read about 12.5 volts when open, and both spark plugs are sparking.

Next up I'll check to make sure the petcock rebuild is working as it should and letting gas through, and do a timing check.

-Other notes-
I have noticed that my starter motor chain is very loose, and any attempt to start using the starter = grinding and sometimes whirring.

Thanks for your help!

The chains are typically loose. If the chain is moving it's probably the clutch that's under the rotor, there are springs under the plungers that get weak and/or break.
